More about the Cambodian Water Project below:

In March 2003, Amherst, MA residents Sokha and Ny Mao traveled back to their home country of Cambodia – a home that they left as young children during the “Cambodian Holocaust” of the late 1970s. During their visit, they were struck by how poor health and sanitation conditions have remained since the war. Many villages, including Ny’s home village, still had no source of clean, potable water or even sanitary facilities, and as a result, villagers were chronically ill.
cambodian water projectSokha and Ny arrived back in the US, with a vision for improving these conditions and reached out to friends and neighbors to assist them. Thus was born the Cambodian Water Project of Massachusetts.
The Cambodian Water Project has focused its efforts on the small villages of Omani, Onk, Pursat, Kaodak, Prey Totand, and Troh Pan Chann. The goal of this project in the beginning was to create clean sources of water as well as adequate sanitation facilities (facilities include a combination of wells and/or small reservoirs, along with low water use toilet systems) to prevent the contamination of new water supplies. Local villagers carry out much of the work using locally available technology and all donations have gone directly to supporting these efforts.
The Cambodian Water Project has also begun to broaden the types of projects in each village to reach beyond water and sanitation. These projects/focuses have been proposed by the villagers and endorsed by the project’s Board. These have included projects relating to education, irrigation and food production and economic development.

She has also volunteered to be the liaison to the Wildwood Spanish-speaking community.

We are lucky to have Mariaelena here at Wildwood!

We are also looking for liaisons to other communities at Wildwood who may benefit from translation services, or a helping hand. Thanks to your generosity, the WW PGO funds our school programs and supports our teachers and staff!

PGO NEWS

WILDWOOD WALKS! More than 100 students participated in Walk to School Day October 5. An international event, it promotes physical activity, pedestrian safety and concern for the environment. Nick Yaffe led the parade from Bertucci's to school, accompanied by the UMass Men's Basketball Team and the Minuteman. The Womens’ Basketball Team and Ms. O’Brien met students who rode the bus to walk around school. The PGO provided bagels and coffee. Building community one step at a time!

READ-A-THON CELEBRATION – Friday Oct 7th

Huge thanks to all the students who read so many books this summer (more than 1000 books) and raised money to benefit the WW school library (more than $4000!) Mary Crowe and Elaine Donoghue did a great job organizing the Read-a-Thon – THANK YOU! The WW library will be able to buy 400-500 more books with the money raised. We know we’ll need those new books, because Wildwood kids are big readers - last year, 30,000 books were checked out of the library. Elaine has put up a “thermometer” that indicates how many books are checked out of the library this year – and so far we are at 3000 books.

SPIRIT NIGHT AT THE PUB: The Wildwood Spirit Night at the Pub is a great way for families to get out together, meet with friends and neighbors and raise some money for the PGO! Thanks to Aaron Jolly, who wholeheartedly welcomed our event (and our kids), a new monthly venue for community building has begun! Next Spirit Night: Monday Dec. 5th.

SCHOOL DIRECTORY: Directories provided by the PGO were sent home in early October!

PGO CONTINUES TO GROW!

NEW COORDINATOR POSITIONS CREATED IN RESPONSE TO NEW ENERGY

The PGO is expanding in new directions this year with exciting initiatives. To make the most of the new energy, the Leadership Committee has established several new coordinator positions. Jen Mendelsohn is Volunteer Coordinator; Anna Butler is the new Arts Coordinator, and Georgia Malcolm the new Fundraising Coordinator. The position of Field Trip Coordinator is the latest position that needs to be filled, which acknowledges the importance of field trips to our school community.

Facilitating full participation on Field Trips is an essential component of the PGO's responsibilities as it illustrates the school's commitment to equity and curriculum enhancement. This region offers a rich variety of opportunities, including our proximity to the UMass Fine Arts Center. Field trip coordinator would work closely with the Treasurer, who will focus on the facilitating other key PGO efforts.

We are also looking for a new Treasurer to shadow Kristen this spring, and take over the reins in the fall. The treasurer plays a key role in preparing the budget, working closely with fundraiser coordinators to collect the money, call for funding requests from school staff, and of course, keep records of and conduct financial transactions. Proficiency in Excel and Quickbooks is required.

THANK YOU TO OUR PGO VOLUNTEERS

OUR ARTS COORDINATOR: Anna Butler. If you have an arts related idea or suggestion, please send it to Anna.

WALK TO SCHOOL: Thank you to Jen Mendelsohn for coordinating the event and to all the great volunteers who made this morning a huge success - UMass Men and Womens' Basketball Teams, Amity Gaige, Tim Watt, Veronica Burbano, Mary Crowe, Kelly King, Vivian Liu, Joleen Millar, Margaret Burland, Jessica Wilkinson, Gelila Tadesse, Donna McCallum, Chris Eveleigh, Mariaelena Garcia, Elizabeth F. O'Brien and Ted Grab.

SPIRIT NIGHT AT THE PUB: Special thanks go to Mariaelena Garcia for organizing the event, Aaron Jolly for his generosity in donating a portion of the proceeds of the event to Wildwood, and Alejandra Garcia and Tea LaRaja for their incredible job running the Raffle!

STOP AND SHOP BONUS BUCKS: Big thanks to Olivia Osten-Manning for gathering S&S Bonus Bucks numbers at Stop and Shop. Olivia gathered over 30 numbers who designated Wildwood as the recipient of their shopping!

READ-A-THON: Mary Crowe (Lead) and Elaine Donoghue (WW Librarian) did a great job organizing the Read-a-thon Fundraiser, and thanks to our Hour Power Volunteers, Rebecca Ready, Suzanne Baxter, Kelly King, and Joleen Millar who helped hand out certificates and prizes to all the Read-a-thon participants at the Read-a-thon Celebration held at the Library on Friday, Oct 7th.

BOX TOPS: Colleen Osten-Manning

PICTURE DAY and RETAKE DAY: Georgia Malcolm (lead), Sarah Marshall, Ruth Hutton, Robin Fordham, Lisa Berry, and Rachael Valentine! Wildwood earned $1200 with this fundraiser!

SCHOOL DIRECTORY: Tracy Hightower (lead) and helpers Vivian Liu and Wendy Tong

BOOK FAIR: Huge thanks to Joe Flueckiger and Tanya Fuller for organizing a great Book Fair and to Jen Mendelsohn for coordinating the volunteers to work shifts, thank you to all the volunteers who helped out!

SAVINGS MAKES CENTS! Millie Zweir is there for your Kids every Wednesday. Helping them with their savings deposits!

GRACIAS MARIAELENA GARCIA!
